The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust was established in 1967 in memory of India’s second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, shortly after his demise. The Trust was founded under the chairpersonship of Indira Gandhi and later led by Rajiv Gandhi. Over time, successive Prime Ministers of India have served as ex-officio chairpersons.
The Trust manages the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial located at 1, Motilal Nehru Place, New Delhi — the residence where Shastriji lived for many years beginning in 1952 during his tenure as Union Minister and later as Prime Minister. The bungalow was converted into a memorial following a Union Cabinet decision chaired by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2000 and was inaugurated in 2005 by Manmohan Singh.
Prominent founding trustees included distinguished national leaders and personalities such as Zakir Husain, Lalita Shastri, K. Kamaraj, Morarji Desai, Jayaprakash Narayan, Gulzarilal Nanda, Y. B. Chavan, N. Sanjiva Reddy, Prafulla Chandra Sen, S. Nijalingappa, V. P. Naik, K. Brahmananda Reddy, Mohanlal Sukhadia, G. M. Sadiq, Atulya Ghosh, N. G. Ranga, Hiren Mukherjee, and industrialist J. R. D. Tata.
The Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial is dedicated to preserving and promoting the life and contributions of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, a statesman known for his humility, ethical leadership, and commitment to national development.
The memorial houses historical artefacts, archival documents, personal memorabilia, and interpretive exhibitions that narrate his journey from a freedom fighter to Prime Minister of India. It also functions as a cultural and educational space for scholars, students, and visitors.
The institution promotes research, exhibitions, public lectures, and outreach programmes focused on governance, leadership, and social responsibility.
To preserve, interpret, and disseminate the values, philosophy, and contributions of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri while promoting national awareness, civic responsibility, and public education.
